Blade of the Phantom Master

新暗行御史

Blade of the Phantom Master takes place in the fictional land of Jushin, modeled after feudal Korea. In Jushin, there once lived secret government agents called the amheng osa (or angyō onshi in the Japanese version), who traveled the countryside in disguise. They were charged by the king with finding and punishing corrupt government officials, and bringing justice to the country's citizens. At the start of the series, Jushin has been destroyed, fractured into numerous fiefdoms and kingdoms, many of which are ruled by corrupt and tyrannical warlords. Blade of the Phantom Master follows the adventures of one of the remaining amheng osa, Munsu, as he continues to wander the countryside and deals with the chaos caused by Jushin's fall. A pretty great tale about a traveller of a lost country. What would a devout knight do if his entire kingdom were destroyed and they somehow survived? This tale says the knight would continue to uphold the code they lived by, even if they alter the rules a little.

The main character, Munsu, is a necromancer of sorts referred to as an Amen-Osa. He summons the phantom soldiers also known as the Ghostly Legion of Jushin, a country that has fallen to a certain calamity or at least that's what I surmised from what we're told.

The things that are focused on are duty, oaths and promises. Right off the bat we're shown the world this last of the Amen-Osa lives in and how he has come to deal with the evil within it. Necessary actions don't always sit well with him but after the death of his king and the fall of his land Jushin, he does what he must to both survive and remain an opposing force to the chaos that now rules.

This isn't action heavy but what action does happen is pretty cool. Sequences are fun and portray the characters in movement clearly, that is to say the scenes don't look like a blurred mess of colours.

A good watch if you don't need bright lights and explosions every 5 seconds.

AN AMEN-OSA STANDS BEFORE YOU!
