Oh boy this is just great!
Please dont watch it thinking its just a comedy anime! And dont take it as a really serious anime either. This show is plain weird if you ask me, and that’s what makes it great for me, but probably not everyone’s cup of tea either.

Lets start off with just the concept and the story. It presents itself as an comedy anime but once you dig really in it you start to see that there’s no comedy whatsoever in the roots of the story. Its pretty dark actually.
And the characters even make fun of the fact that the story is constantly shifting between the light cinematic to the dark cinematic. It kinda of makes you feel on edge because you dont really know when its going to be all funny and cute or when its going to go down and deep in your feelings.

Characters: Unfortunately, there’s only one female character in the whole show, which is kinda of sad but makes sense since genders are not mixed up in common prisons. That said, there’s a whole big enormous variety in male characters. Some are normal plain humans, others are stupidly strong and have super powers. If you tend to fall in love with male characters, this is a show for you.
SPOILER: The only characters with real super powers are the main character and the “villain” in the last episodes and their pasts are really dark. In the few episodes that we get explaining how they got the super powers (that they never asked for) we see just a few moments or even none of comedy. That’s why I said this was no ONLY comedy anime.

Now as for the animation, I love it. Its what this anime has going for it. Aside from the choice of colors that makes the shifting moments more easy to read, the animation itself is really high quality. The creators even had the time to make some references to other animes although those are more common in Nanbaka 2017.
The sparkles are EVERYWHERE, and I mean in every single moment and you kinda of start noticing when something is wrong in the story when you see the number of sparkles going crazy or just disappearing. It makes it easy to read really.
And they kept everything true to the manga, from the characters design, to the plain texture backgrounds which is great.

That said, I loved it, already saw the sequel (which is way darker than this one) and I’m waiting for the next part. I think its a different experience and it kinda became underrated due to the great anime we got in 2016, which is sad but oh well

This anime started out great but became annoying and terrible. So, I ended up dropping it at episode 9.

Story: The story itself was setup to be a gag anime people could watch for fun. I decided to watch it while watching Monster to have something fun to watch (I chose Nanbaka obviously) while watching the thriller and psychological anime.

Again, it sets itself up as a comedy anime. It literally describes itself as a gag anime. Suddenly, out of nowhere, it tries to change into this deep, thought-provoking anime, but ends up looking stupid because it never actually fits in with the previous theme it gave itself. It was annoying because although it admitted to being nothing serious, had a joke frenzy, and tried to be funny, but then tried to give the main character internal struggles out of nowhere?

Powers: This is one of the most annoying parts. There is no basic setup for the power system. Some inmates have it, others don’t. The variety of powers is confusing as well. They never go into detail of how certain inmates got their power, either, other than the main character and another important character. It is just unanswered, out of place, and downright strange.

Animation: GOD THIS PISSES ME OFF. The animation is actually high quality, yet they don’t always draw the backgrounds. It would make sense in joke scenes, but they do it in regular/serious scenes too. Instead of drawing the setting, they would put zebra/flower/etc designs as the background. They also NEVER draw any character that is not main/supporting. So basically, all the other inmates are purple human-looking figures, with no face or design whatsoever, running around. They also use the stereotypical split screens that old shounen anime used, not even as a joke, in serious scenes they would use them, making it look stupid. The action scenes would sometimes be that weird punching motion where the arms are moving so fast it’s a blur and you see several fists everywhere (idk how to explain it).

Overall, this shit sucks.

A comedy filled anime with crazy inmates. Proper use of action with dirty jokes. A prison perfect that should exist for younger inmates. The next season should be be even more crazier than now.

Its hard to choose a fave. There all so wonderful and as you find out more about a character you love them more. Except for the bad guys D:< But currently Nico is my most favored because he loves anime and games and is just adorable<3

It’s a very funny show about friendship and trust with a touch of super-powers.

This show starts like any typical comedy…but it expands into a funny show with characters playing well off each other…I hope gets a 2nd season so it can continue with story…and finish as funny as it started.

I loose hajime and the warden she’s hilarious , bad ass but such a softie for hajime who is unaware of her feelings and I’d terrified of her (I’m rubbish at reviews by the way so skip to a better one )
