Story

Taking after place after Battle of Gods, the remnants of Frieza`s army comes to earth to wish for the revival their powerful lord and savior, only to get the few pieces of him that were left after his fight with Future Trunks. But no worries, their technology has gotten to the point where they can regenerate him from those pieces. Once awaking and killing half of the soldiers present, Frieza decides to get revenge on of Goku. Training for 4 months, Frieza comes back to Earth to launch and an invasion and kill the Sayain that defeated him.

This is all good and except that Goku and Vegeta are off planet, training with Whis, so for now, Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Tien, Master Roshi, and a new character by the name Jaco, The Galactic Patrolman, have to entertain all thousand of Frieza`s soldiers and the big guy himself. Then it`s same old same old, Goku and Vegeta come, Goku fights Frieza first, starts out as a pretty even fight, both fighters show their new forms, but as the battle drags on, Frieza seems to be a bit stronger but then his weakens gets to him, exhaustion...yup.

Because Frieza did not take the extra time to master his new form, his energy is depleting fast, but no worries, Frieza came up with a plan just in case he needed to be bailed out. The last soldier uses his ring ray thing to catch Goku of guard and severely injury him. Now it Vegeta`s turn, and he doesn`t waste anytime, he instantly transforms and pounds on Frieza. Then, Vegeta is right there, right effing there to give the kill shot, only for Frieza to blowup the Earth killing Vegeta. However, Whis and Beerus saves Goku and the rest of the gang from blowing up, rewinding time so that Goku can kill Frieza.
That`s it. This one of the two major problems I had with this movie. The way the movie sets it up, it looks like Vegeta is going to kill Frieza. It would have and makes all the sense in the world for Vegeta to kill Frieza given the history of the two characters, so for them to do a cop out left a bad taste in my mouth.

The other problem, the lack of other characters, just hear me out. Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Tien, and Master Roshi all have their moments, albeit they would have done nothing against Frieza, but they had their moments in defeating soldiers. It makes sense that with a threat this big that 18, Buu, Trunks, and Goten would have joined the fight and it would be interesting seeing Buu and Frieza to have a stare down. By having them absent, it felt like the wanted the last hurrah for these characters. Any villain after this would be to OP for them so it`s great seeing them back in action but it makes sense for the other characters to be with them.

Characters

Overall, there wasn`t any growth in terms when it comes to the characters in the movie sense it`s a very simple revenge story with crazy action happening, but I`ll highlight a few things.

Goku/Vegeta

These two are still having there good old rivalry, even training with Whis. It`s entertaining when these two are at each others throats because Whis would commentate their weaknesses. For example, Whis would tell Goku that he`s too relaxed and tells Vegeta that he hesitates to much, so it is refreshing to see that these two invincible people still have a lot of work to do.

Frieza

Frieza is still the same as the last time we last him, and thats not really a big problem. He is the villain of DBZ, the biggest bady of them all when it comes to what the character means as a whole of the series.  As for his new form, I don`t like it, but I don`t hate it, it`s just meh for me. I would have liked to see something similar to Cooler`s design for his last form, but Toriyama went for a more simplistic design and it`s not bad.

Jaco

Jaco is a new character and is the comedic relief of the movie, and steals the show for me. His job is being a space cop, he goes and warns Bulma of Frieza coming to Earth because the two know each, but when he sees Frieza he`s like "Yeah, not going to fight against that.....nope." The way he fights is also refreshing. He uses the environment to his advantage, he wipes out a large portion of Frieza soldiers by having them being eaten by giant fish-shark thing. The way he views Beerus is also quite hilarious to, he sees as a myth but as soon as he sees him he suddenly wants a picture with the dude like some kind of fan girl.

Animation

The animation is great, sense this is a huge fight fest the animation has to be good, and it is, for the most part. The 2d animation flows great and in the fight scenes, it worked. The 3d animation on the other hand is that great, it still looks good, but there are a bit of hiccups here and there. At times it looked good, other times it looked like the were using 3d models from the old PS2 days. Other than that, animation isn`t much of an issue.

Overall

In terms of which is the better film this or Battle of Gods, Battle of Gods defiantly is and that`s not to say that this is a bad movie, it just didn`t feel like cinematic movie. The ending did leave a bad taste in my mouth and the exclusion of other characters does jog my mind, other than that, I had a great time with this movie.

I was really dissapointed in this film, the story seemed rushed and there wasn't a whole heap of fighting. The fighting scenes where fun to watch but it just felt like a really rushed out film. I think they should have made it longer or multiple parts to make it develop a little more.

The film looked like a really nice polished up DBZ episode from the 90's and the animation looked amazing aswell.

The animation gets a 9/10

Story 3/10

Overall 4/10

I can't believe Im saying this, but the movie would have been good if Goku and Vegeta where not in it.

Akira Toriyama has really lost his touch. I was expecting something like the Frieza saga or Cell saga, but was extremely disappointed at what it really was.
This movie was more on the level of Dragon Ball GT.

After you have watched the movie think about the story, the villain and the heroes.
If there is no way for the good guys to lose, how can the story be interesting?

When I saw the trailer for this, I thought I was gonna get an epic war of sorts. Instead, we got an epic battle of sorts. For my thoughts regarding spoilers, go here: http://boards.adultswim.com/t5/DragonBall-Z-Kai/New-DBZ-movie-to-feature-Frieza/m-p/71466525#M27985
I was really disappointed in this film, but you know what? I had fun.And I feel satisfied after watching it. But I feel like Battle of Gods was better because it had more to offer. Here are the technicals regarding the score: There is no story (shocking). The animation is beautiful. Sounds great too. I also felt character development.
I recommend seeing it, but first watch Battle of Gods. Or apparently watch Dragon Ball Super.
