Majikoi: Oh! Samurai Girls
真剣で私に恋しなさい!The samurai are a very important part of Japan's history, and to be related to them in any way is probably one of the most inspiring things that a young high school student could hope for. Kawakami City is well-known for having many samurai ancestors among its citizens, and is generally surrounded by an atmosphere of fighting spirit, loyalty, and dedication to work. In Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!, the students of Kawakami Academy use this knowledge on a daily basis, whether they are studying for exams, competing in sports competitions, or making sure that they take very good care of their traditions. Yamato Naoe is one such student, and his six closest friends (three boys and three girls) make up the perfect team for friendship, rivalry, and motivation. However, even samurai have weaknesses. Although the balance and long friendship of their group has been undisturbed for a long time, when two new girls enter the group, things start to get a lot more interesting. Not only must they maintain what they think is the samurai tradition, but they must now also do it with a lot of "distractions."

A boringly bad generic harem.
In the first place, this anime gives little to no context or introduction to it’s world or characters, some people are going to be left asking question after question about a lot of things for the whole 12 episodes.
The cast itself is also very uninteresting, anyone who does look like a fun time isn’t given nearly enough screen time. The main cast consists of what you’d think it would, the shy one, the righteous one, the tomboy, the pervert, and the tsundere love interest, all of which spend more time lusting after main character, who doesn’t really have a defineable personality other than being smart, rather than fleshing out any kind of wants, goals or quirks that they each personally have. This would’ve been fine if the main dude humoured their lust, but like any other harem ever he wants nothing to do with them, so be prepared for several scenes of very painfully forced ecchi that are better viewed as gifs without context.
It also does the harem thing where, instead of focusing on the interactions between the the main character and the heroines, there is instead an overarching plot of high stakes which actively prevents any kind of lewd developments to make any kind of meaningful progression.
It doesn’t help that the overarching plot itself is very silly in a boring way.
Ultimately, I’d say pass on this.

its good, watch it
the dub is pretty good (some of the accents are a bit much but you can get used to it) watch it
in general this is a great show, fun romance, fun characters and is a rather unique harem

Majikoi! was exactly what I expected it to be. Another crappy comedy/harem anime. It's so generic that I had a hard time finishing it. I initially set out watching it because of a funny clip I saw on the internet. Even then I expected it be a shitty rom com at the very least. I didn't think it would be so generic though. There were some unique points, but other than that it was just a bunch of overhashed old ideas smacked together in one show. So let's get deeper into the review.
The story was mediocre. It could've been so much better if they made a better balance between comedy/fanservice and story. I'm sure they knew this was never going to get a second season. The least they could have done is given more screen time to the plot and explain things in more detail. It did flesh out some things I like to see in anime though. There was some good introspection and mentions of the philosophies of nationalism/defending one's country. So 6/10 for story.
The art is mostly average with a few saving graces. Some of the character designs are unique/uncommon. I personally liked how different Momo's character design was. All the other characters were average. Actually it looked like a few of them were pulled straight from "Little Busters". 6/10 for Art
The music was okay. Nothing really tugged at my heart strings enough to feel it. The music was nice, but there wasn't enough music to really make it stand out. 5/10 on Music.
The characters were so static and stale. There were points in each episode where characters were fledged out, but there was little character progression. If they focused more on character progression, it would have been better. However, they focused on comedy and fanservice. The character progression for the main character was mostly decent, but the comedy factor ruined it. 6/10 for Characters.
Personally, I didn't enjoy this too much. I've watched far too many harem comedies. I felt like this show could have been more than that. The comedy ruined the plot and character development. I like comedy, but not when it overtakes plot. There were plenty of things to like in this show, but it just didn't go where I thought it should. 6/10 for enjoyment.
I did hear this originally a VN; I never played through that. This could have been much better. Some people may like it for what it is, but it could have been much more. 6/10 overall.

Summary: It's one thing to honor your ancestors and keep old traditions alive, but there IS such a thing as taking it to a ridiculous extreme. In Kawakami City, having a samurai ancestor and enormous 'fighting spirit' isn't just an interesting fact, it's a huge part of how you end up being ranked on the social totem pole. That, in turn, rolls over into the school curriculum. Fortunately, that's something the local kids like Yamato Naoe have learned to deal with by forming into small 'bands,' (that's the samurai type, NOT music). However, while the delicate sexual balance of Yamato's group seemed fine when there were three girls and four boys, the sudden addition of two MORE girls starts to send everything spinning out of control!
Story: the story really takes a back seat in this anime. This is coming from someone who has both read the manga and played the visual novel as well. While there is an overarching story many of the earlier episodes are very slice of life esc. They can almost be watched in any order without a loss of story. The later episodes do start to get more into plot focus though. The overarching story isn't bad and does a good job at maintaining its comedy focus while still trying to tell a character driven story. The focus of the story revolves around a political struggle for power. Its our main characters goal to try and stop some of the strongest fighters in Japan from taking over the government for their own gains. Unlike most harem stories I feel that this one does excels with its plot it ends with a finite conclusion rather then some open ended story. Even the romance is closed off at the end with the main character choosing something to love. Which is what really made this anime stand out for me.
Animation: The animation really excels in the fight scenes. Outside of that though The animation is rather basic. Nothing incredibly special. The animators did stick with the character designs from the visual novel so that was nice to see as well. I would say the animation is probably on par with most slice of life anime out there. Its definitely not bad but I wouldn't watch this for the animation alone.
Sound: As far as the dub goes I think both Japanese and English are good. Both casts do a great job at representing all of the characters. I felt that all of the voices felt right for the character that they were portraying. Also, the intro is very good and enjoyable. Special mention goes to the English voice actress for Chris( a German transfer student) who gave here a very good German accent. For the Japanese Dub some of the female voice actresses come back from the visual novel. This was a pleasant surprise for me as all of the voice actresses fit their role well
Characters: Probably my favorite part of this show is the interesting cast of characters. All of the characters have very fun and interesting personalities from the genius(Yamato) the shy girl(Yuki) the pervert(Shiina) the tsudere(Chris) the bad-ass(Momoyo) and the playful blockhead(Wanko). I felt that all of the characters were very funny but they could have used more development.
The downside to the anime is some of the characters lack depth. This makes them seem very generic. Some of the characters are give small amounts of back stories which does help with their development but I do think this anime would have done better with a 24 episode adaption so the characters could be more fleshed out.
Yamato is really the only character that gets a significant amount of development throughout the series. We learn the most about him and we also learn about his goals and dreams through out the series.
Miyako is another character that we learn a bit about her backstory. This is really do to the fact that in the past she had a strong relationship with Yamato so to show Yamato's backstory you also have to show Miyako's. In the past Miyako was student who was picked on constantly and Yamato stepped up to help her which is the reason for her affection for him in the series.
Momoyo: The strongest fighter in the city who's only goal in life is to find a strong opponent. In the past Yamato confessed his love to her and continuous to confess his love in the series.
Yuki, Chris, and Wanko - Unlike the rest of the cast these three characters aren't given much spot light so overall their characters are devolved into the generic Shy Girl, Tsundere and Dog. I do wish they were given more development but outside of their personality traits that's the most we get for them.
Enjoyment: I really enjoyed this series. In fact I liked it so much I went out and got both the manga and the visual novel. Even though the anime isn't an accurate take on the visual novel it is still very enjoyable and has some great comedy elements. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a good comedy series.
Final Score (Story , Characters, Animation, Sound) 7/10
Enjoyment 8/10

Seeing the first 3 episodes of this series made me play the actual VN the Anime was based on.The impressions I got from the first 3 episodes are hard to put into words, since I was truly left with mixed feelings. Yes, it is an Eroge adaptation. Yes, it looks generic. But I just LOVE it. It's funny. It's enjoyable. In additional, I'm a big fan of Itou Shizuka's (Hinagiku Katsura, Haruka Morishima) voice. And Christiane Friedrich (or Chris for short) seems like a character of perfect fit for her. Just your same, awesome Hinagiku, only with a thing for Justince(!!) and a noble bloodline. If you'll have the hots for Chris, I recommend you play her route in the Visual Novel. You won't be left disappointed. She's all innocent, sexy, just, strong, weak, ridiculous, and funny.I'd give the series a 10, but since we're just 3 episodes in, I'll stay on the safe side and settle for a 9.

What a letdown. After reading the manga I had high expectations from this series, let's just say It was a major let down. I don't want to turn this review into a rant so I'll keep it short.Maji de Watashi's manga had a great cast of characters and enjoyable fight scenes. However with the anime, the producers seems to just replace the fight scenes with nudity and fan service, actually the whole anime was based of fan service. What was an enjoyable manga turned into a typical "Harem"Over all 2/10 A dreadful letdown and disappointment to those who've read the manga. If the people who didn't read the manga, you may enjoy this anime, but don't take my word for it - you might finish this anime as disappointed as I am.
