Himouto! Umaru-chan

干物妹!うまるちゃん

People are not always who they appear to be, as is the case with Umaru Doma, the perfect high school girl—that is, until she gets home! Once the front door closes, the real fun begins. When she dons her hamster hoodie, she transforms from a refined, over-achieving student into a lazy, junk food-eating otaku, leaving all the housework to her responsible older brother Taihei. Whether she's hanging out with her friends Nana Ebina and Kirie Motoba, or competing with her self-proclaimed "rival" Sylphinford Tachibana, Umaru knows how to kick back and have some fun!Himouto! Umaru-chan is a cute story that follows the daily adventures of Umaru and Taihei, as they take care of—and put up with—each other the best they can, as well as the unbreakable bonds between friends and siblings. Really really cute and funny. It’s scary how relatable this is, or at least half of it anyway. Fun snacks, fun games, hamus, lovable characters and more! I’m sad that it’s over but happy there is going to be a new season!

So after hearing people talk about this anime excessively on the internet, I decided to enter this cataclysmic entity dubbed "slice of life" so I could try to see what all of the excitement was about. The main character is a girl with everything in her social life : She's popular, pretty, gets remarkable grades, and is revered as an over all role model to the rest of her peers. UNTIL she gets home that is, because when she does, she transmogrifies into this little ball of...Well, a vast majority of people on this website. She reads manga, plays video games excessively, guzzles soda and chows down snacks like nobody's business, all while pestering her older brother about whether or not he can get the newest issue of "jump" for her. This sets the tone for about, well the rest of the show honestly, there's not much else to say other than the fact that this show is very light hearted, but extraordinarily absent minded. It's what you'd expect from a slice of life, which is to say that it doesn't do anything different. There are no redeeming key plot points, the characters are pretty basic, but have become popular because of the fact that they're amalgamations of fan-service, the art is actually pretty good, the music is...Kazoo master 3000, and the dialogue is repetitive and nothing anyone hasn't heard before.

Although even though I've heavily criticized this show, for what it's worth it's a good anime to just sit down and binge watch, while eating snacks and turning your brain off.

Overall, it's aight.

Story: This show is hilarious. It has really good comedic writing and lovable characters but more on that later. While the story is good I felt that it was a bit generic as far as comedies go in overall plot. Overall is pretty good but a bit generic.

Animation: It was rather average but it has really vivid colors and during umaru's outside scenes the animation on her was really good.

Sound: The voices for all the characters fitted them really well and the opening and ending were really good. However nothing else beyond the opening and ending stood out in the music.

Character: All of these characters were really funny. While they are mostly static I believe that they were the best they could be given the plot and setting. Also Bomber is my favorite character in the show.

Enjoyment: This show is so much fun to watch and will likely make you laugh.

So, uhm, I reflected a bit after I finished watching Himouto! Umaru-chan.
Even if it wasn't the intention, I think it gives a good message, telling about how one person's actions are conditioned by the people near him/her. And, in that case, being an "anime and vidya fan" is a common case that a lot of us have to struggle with, when it comes to hiding it to look like a "normal" person, only because the people put up some really stupid stereotypes since the story remembers. But hey, I still enjoyed a lot the show and I really hope in a second season.

How was the story? It wasn't something dense, but just a light novel about girls who do things and occasionaly have brothers. I would have actually preferred a more bit of story and character's backgrounds, but it was good for the genre.

Animation? That was hella fun! There were some references here and there, and the comedy wasn't full of anime cliches like you'd expect. (Still better than DragonBall Super).

The OP and ED were pretty good imo, the first one gets you in the funny and chill mood, and the other one lets you end the episode with a warm feeling.

Characters were great, and it kinda gives the hint for a new serie (some characters were left behind in the story, the narrator brother too!) and as I said, I enjoyed this show a lot.

Good for a comedy, characters are loveable and the show is real light-hearted and suitable for anybody. Its like most Slice-of-Life shows except less fan-service than usual, apart from Ebina. Oh and Of course there is a beach/pool episode, can't forget that.

A cute show about a young nerdy sister living with her older brother. Umaru-chan is a cute show for anyone that loves anime in jokes about daily lives of people that work hard everyday, but by the end of the day just wanna play games, read manga, and watch anime.

Its really cute for one. Its kind of like Oreimo without the whole incest shitty tsundere harem aspect. Its really well-hearted for any anime fan. The animation isn't anything special, but something about Umaru's personalities (both normal and otaku) are really cute. Sound wise the voice acting is spot on, especially Umaru's. The childish voice acting is really satisfying to hear. The characters seem to be ok too. Everything seems to be generic really, but Umaru really is the star of the show, changing from normal to chibi really is fun to watch. The anime is really enjoyable to watch for any fan. Of course I haven't watched the entire series, but the first episode alone was really enjoyable to me. I'm sure it'll be enjoyable to others aswell. Overall, I can say that this anime is like a newer, better oriemo, ya know without the shit?
