The Unlimited : Hyobu Kyosuke, is a spin-off of Zettai Karen Children, focusing on the antagonist. I was expecting something average when launching the first episode, and was afraid of being totally lost as a guy who didn't know about the first anime but it was a good surprise in the end.

So let's clear two things first :

Do I need to watch Zettai Karen Children before this show ?                -No. You can watch it if you want but it's not necessary at all.

If I didn't liked Zettai Karen Children, should I give this show a chance ?                                                                                      -Yes. After going through 3 episode of The Unlimited, I tried ZKC and didn't liked it at all, they are fundamentally different.

But yeah, even if I did liked The Unlimited it was far from perfect. Thirteen episodes were not enough to develop the cast, the story was interesting but not enough to make you care about the upcoming episodes and I can't even remember a single track of the OST.

At least it was a good show to kill time when I was bored, but it was not enough to recommend it to everyone. I will remember The Unlimited as an enjoyable anime with cool guys using OP powers.

If you have one afternoon to lost, The Unlimited could be a good pick, but there are too many animes who are better than this one if you don't have much free time.

Zettai Karen Children: The Unlimited Hyobu Kyosuke was definitely not what I expected. As an avid reader of the original manga series, I was pleasantly surprised when finding out that Hyobu would be getting his own spinoff show. I heard more and more about this spinoff as time progressed, that it would feature a completely original story, that some of the cast and seiyuu would be returning, and mainly the fact that this spinoff would be significally darker than the first anime series. I had really high expectations.

Unfortunately, not all of these expectations were met.

Story, the story was okay in general. The spinoff took elements from the original manga - mainly the flashback arc for Hyobu and his esper squad. The anime original portion was somewhat cliche and forced, however there were definite high moments.

The Animation was a slight letdown. I loved the art style used by Manglobe, I feel that it definitely suits Hyobu and the story more. But at time the action sequences were choppy and very static.

Sound, nothing too special here, I particularly enjoyed the Ending Song, Outlaws.

Characters. The two new additions to the cast are Andy Hinomiya and Yugiri. Although there was significant character development during the first episodes, they didn't really do much. I could not sympathize with Andy at all. And I still struggle to understand who Yugiri really is. However, Hyobu Kyosuke completely stole the show, and the flashback arc was quite spectacular.

Enjoyment, I can't say I didn't enjoy this show. I enjoyed the original manga immensely so seeing the familiar faces of Minamoto, Kaoru and Hyobu Kyosuke was enough for me.

So overall, not bad. Definitely something to look into if you enjoyed the original manga or anime series. But for newcomers that don't know much of the franchise. It might be a bit hard to get into.
