Luckily, Ah! My Goddess, (or more correctly, “Oh! My Goddess”, and not to be mistaken for the more risqué Ah My Buddha), is a straight-forward romp that won’t confuse you if you aren’t a fan.

The movie disassociates itself from most of its franchise’s extensive canon, and instead focuses on a classic good vs. evil story with lots of will-they-won’t-they tension on the romantic front and a secondary conflict involving motorcycles, of all things.

The main character is a classic nice-guy protagonist named Keiichi. I think the series is trying to play the harem card but fails. Just like Rosario to Vampire, there’s only one love interest that the hero is actually interested in and here that’s Belldandy, who tightropes between coming across as a complete simpleton and just being very kind, which may be the same thing for all I know. If this kind of too-innocent-to-be-true romance bugs you to death, then don't watch this.

I think the most interesting element of the series is its take on heaven and Celtic/Norse mythology, which are both striking and memorable, and I won’t give away here.

I watched it subbed and there appears to be a dub available as well, of questionable but not entirely awful quality.

There are some scores below, if you’re into that sort of thing. I myself have a slight distaste for them.
