High School DxD

ハイスクールD×D

High school student Issei Hyoudou is your run-of-the-mill pervert who does nothing productive with his life, peeping on women and dreaming of having his own harem one day. Things seem to be looking up for Issei when a beautiful girl asks him out on a date, although she turns out to be a fallen angel who brutally kills him! However, he gets a second chance at life when beautiful senior student Rias Gremory, who is a top-class devil, revives him as her servant, recruiting Issei into the ranks of the school's Occult Research club. Slowly adjusting to his new life, Issei must train and fight in order to survive in the violent world of angels and devils. Each new adventure leads to many hilarious (and risqué) moments with his new comrades, all the while keeping his new life a secret from his friends and family in High School DxD! Incredible, cool and thrilling anime! Even though it has loads of ecchi elements and indecent moments, High School DxD is a really good anime with an amazing plot! The characters are, of course, really alluring and attractive and the prospect of demons, angels and fallen angels really spice up the content. Although I am a girl, I really enjoyed watching this anime though I had to glance away from the screen a couple of times... okay, more like a lot of times. But, I really recommend it!

carrie13 - 2014-03-30 04:40:33

Probably the most emotional ecchi anime since School Days. In a good way. Want boobs of all sizes and good story look no further.

nitzsche.lambert - 2014-03-29 17:01:31

Terrible, nothing but boobs and overly-hormonal boys. The story is lack-lustre and quickly loses your attention. The only attraction to this, I hesitate to call it anime, is the opai. I would not recommend this to any self-respecting anime viewer. The animation is ok, but not ground-breaking, everything else is so-so.

You might be thinking why the hell did I give this perverted ecchi anime with no plot such high rating, the reason is because it’s much much much more than just a simple ecchi anime

The plot is something I didn’t expect, like you I considered it an ecchi anime and nothing else but it surprised me. The show was funny when it wanted to be funny, ecchi when it wanted to be and also dark and Fucking emotional when it wanted. The plot brought sooo much more than what other shows have to offer.

They only grip you may have about this show is the boobs/the ecchi moments which there are Plenty of but it never took away from the experience of the story, it didn’t bother me as much as other animes because this anime knew when to emphasize the ecchi and when bring it down a notch.

The opening and endings songs are really good and I found them very catchy. The music in the anime brought more intensity to those dramatic scenes and always added to the mood but never hindered the events.

This anime brought a lot of emotion out of me that I haven’t experience in a long time, it may not be suited for everybody and it may not be the greatest anime ever but I would Highly Recommend you watch this anime if you are even in the slightest bit interested in it.

OPPAI!!! Highschool DXD is very plot centred with an original intricate story that-... *sigh* It's hard to defend so I'll just speak honestly. Highschool DXD is has Boob, tits, ass and takes any opportunity to show them. The main protagonist is the horniest of the horny to point where he can be swayed mid battle by boobs. Fanservice is border line Highschool of the Dead and Ikki Tousen. The plot is your typical Angels vs Devils vs Fallen angles vs Dragons Races. I will give the plot credit and say that it shares a very unique perspective on how every race has its goods and bads. As well, the main character is a weak piece of shit, but he does slowly improve on his skill and trains on controlling it right of the bat, other then let it fight for him *cough* Naruto *cough*. The Females Protagonist are you typical batch of harem girls.*Despite me having a thing for Akeno ;)*

Buuuuuutttttttt. I did overly enjoy it. I enjoyed the overly perverted Issei and laughed at him throughout. I liked the fan service and Rias's seductive yet affirmative attitude. Akeno's masochistic personality the sweet and adorable Asia, Akeno, the strong and quite Keneko, and Akeno. The funny moments, the serious moments (yes it does have them). And the OPPAI!!!!!!!

Starting off saying, this is a SERIOUSLY ecchi anime sooo if you want to see that stuff by all means go ahead, but if you don't like it well don't watch High School DxD. Trust me by episode 4 you'll be thinking "WHY did I watch this."Anyway the plot and story are kind of cool which is why I rate it a 7, but it's REALLY perverted, like more than Girls Bravo if you've ever seen it. So basically there's a perverted high school boy and he wants to get a girlfriend and he does. She turns out to be a Fallen Angel (bad guy) and kills him. Another Fallen Angel kills him again later. Both times he's miraculously saved by the red-haired girl he saw. So in exchange for being saved he has to be a Devil and serve under Rias, the red-haired girl. U put that because people get angry if there's no summary in the review even though there's a summary right above the reviews spot.So it's a 7/10. Have fun watching it if you want to.

Introduction

High School DxD is first and foremost and ecchi, which is the only reason that I, or anyone I know, has decided to watch it, but the thing that struck me the most was the quality of the story and how, by the end, I could honestly say that I would have liked it without the endless fan service, but as always, boobs just make it better!

Story

The show starts off following our main character Issei, who is your typical perverted ecchi protagonist. Somehow though, he is asked out by a girl, who he then proceeds to date until she suddenly...kills him. In his pre-death state, he finds his last thoughts drifting towards a beautiful Scandinavian girl called Rias that he has seen around his school, and just before he dies, he sees her appear and she asks him to live for her. He then wakes up the next morning, thinking it was all a dream, but later finding out that no one remembers his girlfriend. Confused, he goes back to the place where he was killed, only to be stabbed by a fallen angel and almost killed again, but once again Rias appears and scares off the fallen angel. The next morning, Issei wakes up thinking that he had another strange dream, but this time Rias is in his bed completely naked (for no real reason). She then explains to him that he has been reborn as a devil and that he must serve here from now on.

The story then follows Issei as joins the Occult Research Club, which is Rias' family of devils, and learns how to be a devil and what they do, but soon complications arise and the plot turns away from the everyday life of the club and stuff starts to get interesting.

I have to say that when I decided to watch this for the first time, I wasn't expecting the story to be anywhere near what it was, and I'm glad that I did because the story alone is worth watching it for. Basically, I thought it would be a lighthearted comedy with the occasional piece of plot thrown in, but it was much more than that, as the lightheartedness was only present when it should have been and there was the right amount of serious scenes too. But of course, this is an ecchi, so there is also tons of fan service and many, many breasts throughout, which some people find off-putting while others either think it's a selling point, or simply ignore it. Personally I feel that, at some points, the mild nudity is almost required (don't want to spoil too much), but at others, it is totally unnecessary and it feels like they're doing just because they can. To be honest, I don't think that the over-the-top stuff should get in the way and I think that the story is great either way.

Animation

While it's not a visual masterpiece, the action scenes are smooth and nice to watch, and the art style is perfect for the style of anime. Not sure what else to talk about in this section other than there's nothing about the animation, that I can see, that would put people off the anime.

Sound

While nothing amazing here, the music in most scenes is well suited and there is a nice piece of music that is played during the darker moments, i.e. Issei's death in the first episode. Also, I feel that I should mention the opening and closing songs because they are both good songs that I can listen to on their own with no problem.

As someone that cannot speak Japanese, all I can say about the Japanese voices is that none of them seem out of place and there are no particularly bad voices. The English dub of DxD is currently being made, with a dub trailer released a few weeks ago that shows some of the main voices in the show. The only thing I can say so far is that the voices shown seem to be what you would expect from Funimaton, but some of the lines seem to have been completely changed, making one of the main characters talk like some kind of skater instead of how she talked in the original, which was almost the complete opposite.

Character

The main character, Issei Hyoudou, is a rather typical protagonist of an ecchi show, as he is perverted and usually has the carefree happy-go-lucky attitude that you would expect, but he does have a dark intense streak where he would do anything to kill someone who he feels really deserves it. The other main character is Rias Gremory, who is a pure-blooded devil who has saved a handful of people (the members of the Occult Research Club) and has turned them into devils who are effectively her slaves, although she doesn't treat them as such. The other main characters would be the other members of the club, but as only one really gets the spotlight and I want to stay as spoiler-free as possible, I won't go into this.

The characters are all very different from each other and this makes their interactions interesting and makes up most of the comedy, especially seeing how each character reacts to Issei and his "ways". Also, among the handful of devils in the main group, I can almost guarantee that you can find a character that you'll like.

Enjoyment

I really enjoyed this anime and think it needs more credit for being what it is, an ecchi with a story! Obviously some people will not like it, as there is a lot of fan service and possibly because there is too much comedy involved, but being someone who normally dislikes ecchi comedy, I can say that there was none of the typical jokes, although some people may be against that too.

Overall

I really think that most people would enjoy this anime, and would recommend it to most people, because there is basically something for everyone. The only thing that could put people off would be if they were strictly against something like the constant nudity, albeit mild. I can also undertand if people are against Issei's character, but for an ecchi character, he's not bad. Basically, if you like ecchi and/or action animes, I'd say that you should give it a shot, because it's a really good representation of both of these genres and if you are only interested in one, it may be a good look into the other.

Highschool DxD, a totally original story about a perverted guy in high school, surrounded by a bunch of girls with tits the size of the sun. However this is marketed as an "ecchi" show so I'll let that slide.~~Spoilers ahead~~FAN SERVICE: An act of adding materiel into the series with the intention of pleasing the viewer. After I said that I think that fan service is an act of subtracting, subtracting almost all of both cloths and plot. Metaphorically lets think of an anime as a serving of ice cream, and think of fan service as ice cream sprinkles over a ball of ice cream (the plot). If I'd ask you which would be tastier and more filling, you would say the ice cream with ice cram sprinkles. However from time to time a studio would remove the ice cream out of the story (no pun intended) and instead decides to spoon feed the viewer sprinkles. So, why would studios do this? Because some people love f*in' sprinkles. With that being said, Highschool DxD would metaphorically be what you call "Les tub of sprinkles"The story of this anime was REALLY interesting, the idea of a guy getting reincarnated from a devil, and having him fight in the conflicting factions of the fallen angles and the devils was an interesting idea, on paper that is. This series didn't really portray the plot very well, and like I said, it replaced the goodness of the ice cream with sprinkles. It also had a really bad case of clashing tones, where from when the series tries to turn it's tone down and gets serious it doesn't turn down the fan service, I mean, when something sad or exiting is happening the camera is usually aimed at wither a pair of tits or panties. Overall I think that the plot had great potential but was lead down by the very small amount of ice cream that was hidden in a sea of fan service, or sprinkles. The characters in this anime was cliche as it can be, a perverted main character, and a bunch of tits on a stick with only 1 or 2 defining characteristics, and I can even prove that to you:Koneko Toujou : LoliYuuto Kiba : That guy who gets the p*ssies wetIssei Hyoudou : Perverted yet he gets all dem tittiesAkeno Himejima : TitsRias Gremory : Tsuder-- wait I mean TITSudereAsia Argento : "I randomly like the main character because of a reason unknown to anyone but me"Yupppppp....With the terrible plot and characters aside, the art and music in this series was actually really well done! The art was a tiny bit above average and the OP and ED was catchy, however there was one thing that keeps bugging me, the opening had most of the female characters completely nude, which in my mind, was the show trying to sell itself as soft-core hentai. With that aside the OP and ED was done very well, I have no problem listening to it. Also the background music was AMAZING, I repeat, AMAZING! It was like an oasis in the middle of the desert, at first I didn't even believe that the OST was from such a mediocre anime, and probably the only reason I kept on watching this anime is because of the soundtrack.Scores~~~~Story : 1/10Art : 6/10Sound : 9/10Character : Tits/10Overall The anime gets a very mediocre 5/10.And before fans of the anime tries to tell me that I should at least try to enjoy the series or to just switch my brain off, I did. If I didn't switch my brain off while watching this and had taken the show seriously I wouldn't never lasted 3 episodes let alone 12! Sorry, but I just didn't like it. I mean I can understand why people would like this anime, I could give you 2 reasons right now : panties and titties. Anyways I couldn't recommend this series to anybody, unless you're one of the selected few seeking to be the master of bater. However, listen to the sound track, just don't watch the anime.

You claim ecchi shows have no plot? Think again! At first glance, the High School DXD might seem that way, but in reality it has many moments that keeps pointing in one direction. Sure, it's not going to be some mindblowing masterpiece like Death Note, but how can you even compare High School DXD to something so different?! We have to realize that the main goal of the show is to make us go crazy over with the fan service while entertaining us with the progressive storyline. So far, it has done that well.

Being a massive fan of the DxD series, I absolutely loved the anime adaptation. Anyone who has read the light novels would realise just how much emotional depth all the characters go through, especially Issei (the main protagonist) who I can only say had a VERY traumatic first girlfriend experience. High School DxD has a new take to a harem story, the author guaranteed a happy ending for all the girls and the plot is getting results that show it unlike other harem stories which can just end up a pain in the neck as the main protagonist is unable to choose.

First of all, you can immediately see the amazing art of the anime which can live up / match on par to the beautiful character designs that Miyama-Zero created. This of course closely ties into the effects used in the animation which were pretty much spot on to how i imagined them to be, especially in the battle scenes.

You hear a lot of people complain about this series being "too ecchi" and put you off from watching but you'll just be missing out. This series was made with ecchi in mind but not to the degree of other series such as To Love Ru or Sekirei; they're pretty much several times worse in terms of ecchi level. However, I will say that the anime did add more fanservice and nude scenes than the original novel which many may think as a way to get views and sales. I myself am glad they did, not because there's more ecchi scenes to see but because it increases the chances of another season. The reason why im hoping for more of the anime is because the best parts of the story are towards to latter half of the light novel volumes and I would like to see it animated. The extra fanservice was doen in good taste and suited the pace of the story so it can be overlooked.
This might be seen as hateful to do but the fact is that it wasnt done in a hateful manner; they didnt censor the all the scenes like the Majikoi anime where it pretty much forces you to buy the uncensored DVD / Blu-Ray releases.

For anyone who thinks that there is little character development, I can now inform you that a second season is going into production and I guarantee that you wont be disappointed with the new characters that are going to appear. Every character has a part of themselves that is kept hidden past but the troubles are overcome through the friendship and relationship amongst the group.
*Small spoiler* For the more battle loving fans, Issei's predetermined external rival will arrive soon

Although there were some unnecessary parts included to buff out the anime, namely by including some of the short stories, the anime remained rather faithful towards the original story. In reality, it would have been better if they spent more time on the main plot to include more details and make the short stories into OVAs.
Of course, they didnt miss out some infamous lines where the most memorable one appears in episode 12 of the anime. It would have been preposterous for them to have missed out that one.

I know that this review may have strayed from just talking about this season of this anime and I apologise for that however, I needed to bring in other factors in hope that all you out there give this a shot and persuade you to watch it as the foundation to the greatness that is to follow. Reviewing DxD in such constricted context does not bring it justice.

On a final note, don't watch this with females unless you know they're alright with an ecchi series...They're only going to get jealous with the beautiful female characters
