This is my first review, so please bear with it, and I welcome all feedback about it. [SOME SPOILERS AHEAD]
Sabagebu is certainly not the first anime dealing with airsoft, HS girls and their daily lives. If you've watched Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu, at a first glance both animes seem extremely similar.
Oh, but you are sooo sooo wrong...
While C³-bu deals with cute girls playing airsoft as a mean for bonding and achieving their goals in life, all while shooting pink coloured plastic balls at each other and using cutesy tactical gear, Sabagebu takes a completely different twist.
Your "cutesy" quota is filled on the looks only (and only sometimes), since the main heroine is a heartless woman, driven by greed and with no affection for anyone else than her, the "senpai" character is a gung-ho clutz and the club pet is a platipus with a knack for firearms and military vehicles. We see a lot of quotes and references to themes and characters from war and pop culture films/games which adds to the comedy, and no episode is like the other.
Story: 6
Not gonna lie, there isn't much of a story here. Most episodes are comprised of 2 or 3 mini stories, which are loosely related. Don't espect a story-worthy anime, more like go with the flow and have a laugh.
Animation: 7
Good work, but nothing otherwordly. Extra points for character design and some of the cameos. The gear and guns are pretty detailed for a comic anime (don't expect Kenichi Sonoda, tho).
Sound: 5
Nothing to hear here, SFX were the only worthy thing. Gun sounds are correct, if anything else.
Character: 8
No, it's not about the complexity or depth or development of the characters. Is about how histerically fucked up they are in their own way. No one is spared, not even the MC's mother. You can see them happily chatting away, and in the next scene guns are drawn at each other, fires are blazing all around, chopper is inbound to the LZ and it's a shootout to death. I swear I was waiting for Momoka to hit Urara just to hear her inner dialogue.
Enjoyment: 10
I admit it, this is completely biased. I love military anime, I've played airsoft myself, I love war/action films and dark humour, so this was a really good anime to kill some time.
Overall: 7
It seems like Sabagebu is an anime tailored for some very specific audience. Mainly those who watched C³-bu, liked it, but were expecting more... blood? Action? Nonsense? Not one of my favourites nor a masterpiece, but definetly worth watching for the lulz.
