There are many reasons not to like the Monogatari series the wonky animation, the dialogue-heavy scenes, or the borderline hentai moments. But for me in all honesty Kizumonogatari 3 was some of the best anime I’ve seen in awhile. Now I Marathon all three movies together to get the full story, and honestly the first movie was maybe an 8 because nothing really happened in it. The second movie was a 9 because the fight scenes were great but it was still missing something and I just couldn’t put my finger on what. but this movie, part 3, is definitely without a doubt a 10/10. Now on to why, honestly the best part of this movie is the dialogue, now yes the fight scenes were fucking amazing, and yes there is a scene in a gymnasium that is borderline hentai that is honestly amazing to watch because of just how hilarious it is to see shit go down, but what really gets me is the dialogue. The scenes that with every word that comes out of a characters mouth get you right in the heart and pulls at your heartstrings with every word, and the things that make you empathize with Araragi and all the other characters in this movie are what make this movie a 10 in my opinion and I must watch for anyone who is interested in the Monogatari series.

The Monogatari series is a polarizing one: you either love it or hate it. It might be the dialogue-heavy nature of this show, or the wonky animation, or the abundance of fanservice. All these can be valid reasons for not liking a show. Despite that, Monogatari has been critically acclaimed for quite a while now. Kizumonogatari follows that trend, following the franchise formula while starting off the series in a way that newcomers may be enticed to give this series a shot. This is a review for the entire Kizumonogatari movie franchise, albeit while trying to present the series without spoiling too much of it.

Kizumonogatari is the prequel to the entire Monogatari series. It details how Ararararararara-sorry, I stuttered-I mean, Koyomi Araragi first got involved with apparitions in the first place. Specifically, one busty vampire named Kiss-Short Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade comes into his life and changes it forever.

If you’re unacquainted with the series, Kizu and the other titles under the Monogatari umbrella were written by Nisio Isin and detail the life of Koyomi Araragi, a teen with a penchant for getting himself into situations involving apparitions. It is no different here. Without going into details, Shuraragi-kun ends up becoming a vampire because of his interaction with the aforementioned vampire, Kiss-Shot. The story of this movie series is Araragi trying to find a way to become human again.

The first two things you’ll notice when watching this film are the avant-garde animation and the spit-fire dialogue. The franchise is known for both. SHAFT continue to do what they do best, presenting an interesting premise in ways one might not expect, head-tilts and all. Each scene is impeccably time to fit into the next, flowing naturally into the next. That is, until they don’t. The fine line between visually stunning and jarring is tiptoed magnificently here with Akiyuki Shinbo at the helm. His flair for the eccentric comes out in style, as it does in all his other works. Several camera angles are used throughout the films to portray different viewpoints. Symbolism abounds, subtly showing the psyches of several characters. However, some parts of the films involve CGI, which is a personal peeve of mine when it doesn’t flow consistently back into 2D. Your mileage may vary here.

What does not vary though is the voice acting. The talented cast once again brings their A-game, simultaneously reminding old fans of this show’s appeal (interestingly conceived dialogue through interesting characters) while giving newcomers a reason to watch the main series. Hiroshi Kamiya portrays Durararagi-kun, similar to the one presented in the main series yet in a more inchoate state. While his banter with Tsubasa Hanekawa (voiced by Yui Horie) is consistently entertaining, they do not hit their stride until the second movie, when it is certain that their relationship is genuine.

The music of the series does what it needs to do: it is shaky and chaotic when something insane is going on, tension-building when there needs to be tension, subdued in calmer scenes and energetic in action-packed ones.

Kizumonogatari manages to have everything for everyone. For veteran fans like myself, it presents a missing piece of a story that anime fans from all over have been aching to see for a while now. For newcomers, it is the first piece of the same story, and works as a great start-off point (though I would recommend watching the first series, Bakemonogatari, first). There’s action, there’s dialogue, there’s (interesting) fanservice, and a story that fleshes out already-great characters. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that newcomers to the Monogatari franchise want to know about the world of Araragi and his acquaintances.
