Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess
劇場版 FAIRY TAIL 鳳凰の巫女The film revolves around a mysterious girl named Éclair who appears before Fairy Tail, the world's most notorious wizard's guild. She lost all of her memories, except for the imperative that she must deliver two Phoenix Stones somewhere. Starting off, I have to say that this movie (or OVA) is great if you have been craving more Fairy Tail in the form of anime. However, the movie does lack key elements that even I feel could have been executed better. Do not get me wrong, I loved this movie and I thought it had great moments, but it does have negative aspects.
STORY
The story was quite forgettable, for me at least. Throughout the entire movie I felt like the other parts of the movie didn't matter too much, until another part of the movie references it, which added importance. It did lack for me a little bit, but it wasn't horrendous. I give it a 6/10.
ANIMATION
I give props to the animation studio because they tried a different art style with Fairy Tail in this movie and I absolutely adored it. It was fresh and it made it feel new and not just a little OVA that wasn't on it's own merits. With that being said, I give it a 10/10 because I couldn't find any errors that would impact my thoughts on it.
SOUND
The soundtrack in this movie is really upbeat and really matches the theme of the show, which is great. The opening and ending fit the moments perfectly. Like the opening song matched the hype for the movie, and the ending song captured the sad, tragic kind of tone it had at the end. The OST's in the middle were forgettable, as I don't even remember how it went. So I give this section an 8/10.
CHARACTER
This is where I am in the middle of the road. I liked Lucy's development as a character, but Eclair's was rushed, not really giving her time to develop the way she would need to. One of the things I love about the characters in this movie is that alot of the side characters get a chance to shine, and that is important with a huge cast that Fairy Tail has. I give this section an 8/10.
ENJOYMENT
This may be seen as biased, but I adored this movie! It does have flaws, but I think it redeemed itself with better comedy than the anime series and a different approach to the Fairy Tail we all know. I give this part a 9/10 because of the slight dislike with parts of the story.
OVERALL
Just like with the enjoyment factor, I think it redeems itself in alot of ways, but the story really hurt the movie from being near perfect. I give Fairy Tail: The Phoenix Priestess an 8/10.
