I can't believe I watched the whole thing.
I watched this anime long ago, and still some nights when lying deep in peaceful slumber as my mind drift away, a dreadful memory pulls me back in cold sweat, for there's no calm for those who've seen the flag. And so I piss the nights away in restless wake, dare I not try and go to sleep, the horror waits for such a chance.

When I saw the first episode I was really sold on this anime, a person who can see three types of flags: friendship, love and death. But as the episodes went on they out of the blue decided there was an infinite number of flags all for over-specific instances. What I'm trying to say, is that they failed to set any ground rules on how the MC's power works.

Aside from that the characters are all very one dimensional, as can be expected in harem anime. Which is part of my argument as to why harem anime just shouldn't be a thing. You have to divide up all the writing to every character leaving all of them malnourished.

The only character with even the slightest bit of complexity is the main character who is just obnoxious all the way through. He has a "tragic" backstory that is sad, yes. But I don't feel sad for the character, a story like that would make me sad no matter who it was about. Which always reflects poor writing to me.

In the end it's just another generic harem anime disguised as something different. If you're the kind of person who likes that, go ahead, but no one should feel bad about skipping this.

It was surprisingly good in certain aspects, but I think it needed to stick with either the harem comedy, or become a serious story.  It was rather difficult to keep track of the plot (maybe because I watched it on a weekly basis, as opposed to marathoning it).  But I do like the wide variety of characters, music was great, and overall worth the watch!  Gwaooo Gwaooo!

彼女がフラグおられた

BeforeI begin, let me disclose a couple of things. I went into the series blind. Idid not read the manga nor did anything related to spoil the story. I read noneof the comments posted on Crunchyroll as the series progressed. Well let’s getstarted.

Music

Therewas only one time that I was fooled by the first opening of an anime and thatwas Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica, with its signature happy opening that by episodethree would be meaningless because of all the mind fuckery that it contains, though it was brilliant up until the lastest movie. This particular openingdoes the same thing but in a more subtle way. You have more time with thecomedy aspects of the show, while the darkness slowly drips in as the showprogresses. This makes the opening more tied with the series in my opinion thanthat of Madoka Magica’s. Though I didn’t find it particularly great overall.Just nice and a good fit for the series.

Story

Thestory follows Hatate Souta, a gloomy boy who moved into a dorm far away fromthe Academy he goes to. As the episodes advance he gets introduced to a varietyof character that are your typical anime archetypes with an added flair ofsaying (God this annoyed me), “ですね。ですね。” or “ やよ。”.  Anyway, the general story follows thelife and suffering of Souta being the only survivor of cruise ship accident andliving with a death flag. I can’t really say more than this without spoilingthe story. But trust those who read the Light Novels/Manga or watch the Animeare in for a treat.

Animation

Standardanimation provided by Hoods Entertainment known for some Hentai Animation and afew other anime, such as Mysterious Girlfriend X. Above all the animation wasn’tspectacular nor faulty as in the case of Evangelion.

Let's get something out of the way first. This is a bonafide harem show, and if you can't get past that fact, then turn the other way right the fuck now. I'm serious, this isn't for you.

This is what I would call an interesting self-referential take on the harem genre... to a point. The premise alone struck my interest. A boy is essentially able to change people's fates by reading event flags on top of their heads. If you don't atleast have a passing knowledge of visual novel conventions, this whole mechanic will be lost on you.

It's certainly interesting how many varieties of flags they came up with and how Souta tackles them. Though it isn't really as in-depth as I imagined, it usually just amounts to either "Do X or Y for certain result". Granted, that's how actual VNs work too, but I expected a bit more from a series whose entire premise is based around that.

So yeah... the characters. There sure are a lot of them. Like most harem shows, the only relevant male is Souta himself so the rest are all girls. And holy shit, I think this show was trying to set a speed record on how much pussy one guy could get in 13 episodes. There are atleast 13 girls who crave his D. (And no, it isn't one an episode as you might think. The plot moves quicker than that).

I gave it a flat average score because for a harem, it's alright. They all have their quirks but are mostly archetypal in the end. They even managed to make NEW archetypes I hadn't seen yet before, so I have to applaud the author on his creativity at the very least.

The plot starts off as a fairly generic harem comedy until the mystery sets in. Why can Souta see these flags? Why are there cryptic clues to a grand conspiracy lying around? Why does Souta have a perpetual death flag on top his head? etc. etc.

The conspiracy plot is rather well-done for the most part. Giving you droplets of information at a time to some memorably creepy background music. It ends up becoming a much more interesting story than its premise would suggest. I won't give anything away, but there are some major twists and turns towards the end.

Although speaking of that, I have to wonder if they fudged an original ending for this anime. The light novels are still on-going but the plot seems rather complete by the end of this show. The twist isn't bad, but it doesn't feel like all the pieces really fell into place. It could've been rushed explanations or poor planning or whatever.

But the end result is that, while satisfying, the ending isn't as airtight and well-written as it could've been.

The animation was done by Hoods Entertainment, who also did Mysterious Girlfriend X, an anime that looks spectacular. This show however... does not. It's rough around the edges in terms of visual style and consistency. Lots of off-model shots and jerky movement and even a few coloring errors I spotted. Clearly suffers from a smaller budget.

It's hard to say anything more without giving anything away. I will warn you though that you MUST have a taste for harem antics and comedy if you want to enjoy this show. Because that's most of what it is. There's a lot of serious conspiracy stuff, but 80% of the time, it's harem comedy. So just be aware of that.

Definitely not for everyone, but I can appreciate what it was trying to accomplish. Mixed bag, but worthy experiment.
